The national society was founded in 1967 with the sole aim of promoting music making on handbells. It is the only national organisation devoted to tune ringing on musical handbells.

HRGB's objective is quite simply, 'To advance, provide and encourage for the public benefit the art of handbell tune ringing in all its forms'.

To promote this aim the society endeavours to bring ringers in contact with each other enabling the exchange of ideas and providing advice and information to those who need it.

HRGB provides a forum for discussion, information and the practical advancement of the art. Music is also published by the Society.
