Shanturia Dance Theatre is a touring company that provides dance workshops for schools, colleges and community groups in the private and public education sectors. We cater for all ages and abilities including people with special needs. Workshops are available for Ballet, Contemporary, African-Caribbean dance and Street Jazz. We also offer theraputic Grounding African-Caribbean movement workshops.
Under the directorship of Malachi Spaulding, Shanturia has established itself as a performance/workshop company inspired by the local community: rich in its own diversity and culture.
Shanturia has since gone on to produce high quality shows which have been toured around the UK. The company gained critical acclaim for their production, Earth, Wind, Fire and Water, which was performed as part of the Mosaics Festival 1995. More recently, in 2004, the company took their touring production 'Nubain Sisters' on the road to great acclaim.
Malachi Spaulding is the founder and Artistic Director of Shanturia Dance Theatre. Malachi trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where he gained his Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree. He then trained at the Ballet Rambert School. Malachi performed with the Vienna Festival Ballet as a soloist in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Coppelia. He has also performed in the award-winning West End production The Lion King.
Malachi has danced with Irie Dance Theatre, gaining valuable experience working with leading African Dance specialists Peter Badejo and H. Patten. Malachi's wide-ranging teaching experience includes posts at the London School of Musical Theatre, Stagecoach Theatre School, Theatre Train, and the Royal Ballet 'Chance to Dance' team. He also provides individual dance coaching to young professionals and private clients.
