Karen Neill - Liquid Crystal
Stills of her work can be seen on her website and are for sale as well as her 'moving paintings'.
Karen has just completed a film of moving liquid crystal and edited by Professor Nik Martin:
These intimate 4D moving paintings gaze into a phenomena, inviting the viewer to submerge within the realms of ethereal depths. As the liquid warms and cools the textures and spectrum writhe and flow enticing sensory perception as a time traveling tool; it takes us to another world, it tests our senses and questions our perception of the hidden depths and currents of the movement of matter.
Artists' statement:
After graduating in Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art at Central St Martins - University of the Arts London, I spent 3 months on a residency at the Liquid Crystal Institute in USA where I worked as an artist in the laboratory, filming and photographing the movement of the liquid through the microscope.
My work deals with the behavioral characteristics of the movement of fluid and in particular liquid crystal. I capture the full colour spectrum and the intrinsic qualities of its molecular structure, through film and photography using polarized light to reveal the molecular orientation.
I was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ at the Daily Telegraph and Novartis Scientific Photographic Awards 2005.
I am a Fellow of The Digswell Arts Trust and work from my studio at the The Forge Digswell Herts. Visits by appointment only.
