Regia Anglorum offers a wide range of fascinating opportunities to investigate - by both practical and academic means - the lives of the Anglo-Saxon, Viking, Norman and other peoples who lived in and around the islands of Britain a thousand years ago.
They regularly set up Living History Encampments at events throughout the UK. From this tented environment, they demonstrate various crafts in pursuit of the image of an artisans camp at a market or festival. Thirty to forty structures is not unusual.
The Society owns five ship replicas of various sizes from a replica of the Goskstad Faering to three sea-going vessels approaching fifty feet long.
In those "interesting times", peace was only brought with war and a safety-orientated military training system has evolved over twenty years of active service in re-enactment. Regia teaches weapon skills applicable to the newest spearman and through each grade of combatant to the fully equipped horseman in battle.
Always pushing the boundaries, the society is now building a permanent site in Kent. They have purchased three acres of land, cleared the commercial forestry, constructed a rampart and ditch, bought 23 tonnes of English oak and are now constructing a Longhall of heroic proportions!
Membership is £25 a year and they positively welcome families with children in addition to anyone above the age of sixteen who has an interest in the period. Under sixteens can only join with their parent or legal guardian. The society is non-religious, non-political and all profits are ploughed back into the joint resources of the society.
If you have ever thought that you might like to see what re-enactment is all about, don`t hesitate to contact Regia Anglorum.
