French and Jupps is a family business, which has been run by the Jupp family for over 300 years.
Started originally by Sussex farming families near Chichester, who exported their malt all over the world from Dell Quay, the port of Chichester. Due to a business relationship with the Whitbread family, maltings were opened in Brentford to supply Thomas Whitbread's Brewery in this town. This eventually lead to a roasting factory being opened near Liverpool St Station, which was very close to Chiswell St, the biggest of the Whitbread Breweries at that time (ie 1840). The company owned the wharf at the base of the Grand Union Canal, which resulted in all the breweries of England being supplied with colour for their beers.
In 1896, the company moved to Stanstead Abbotts, near Ware, where it is still possible to serve London brewers by barge on the River Lee. Railway connection supplied the remaining brewers as far North as Leeds. Whilst French and Jupps remains the only working malting in Hertfordshire and is the only privately owned maltster in the home counties, there is one other in Dorset who run their malting more as a museum for tourists. However the survival of the company has been entirely due to specialising in Coloured malt, which colours Heineken and Guinness.
