The National Trust was founded in 1895 to preserve places of historic interest or natural beauty permanently for the nation to enjoy.
It is independent of the goverment and relies totally on donations, gifts, legacies and contributions of volunteers. All of its income is spent on the care and maintenance of land and buildings in its care.
The NT is committed to promoting the understanding and enjoyment of its properties through educational use by people of all ages.
