Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) provides information, publications and advice. It is controlled and run by people who are spinal cord injured, because the sharing of information with those who have had the same experience is the key to all the services SIA provides to support its members.
Spinal Injuries Associations' Freephone Advice Line provides up to date, accurate and comprehensive information covering a wide range of issues to do with spinal cord injury. Enquiries on such issues as fertility, pain, legal rights, independent living, access, holidays and many more topics are dealt with by letter, phone and email either directly or via the website (adviceline@spinal.co.uk). A translation service 'Voice Choice' (as part of 'Equally Able') is available for people for whom English is a second language.
Advice Line opening hours: Monday-Friday 9.30am-4.30pm (closed 1.00pm-2.00pm).
The Link Scheme gives members the chance to share information and experiences with others who may be suffering or have overcome problems that they are dealing with. Peer Support Services are offered along with Community Peer Support for newly injured people.
With only eleven spinal units in the country, travel can be a problem for the families of newly injured family members. The SIA has a fund which can give small donations towards travelling costs.
The SIA National Library on spinal cord injury is located at SIA House and is open to all who have an interest in this area. See the SIA website for details.
SIA exists because life needn't stop when you are paralysed.
