The Shingles Support Society was formed and recognised officially as a sub-group of the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA) in 1996.

The SSS supplies information and advice on both medical treatment and self-help methods to deal with post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), which can follow shingles particularly in older patients.

Shingles is caused by the herpes varicella-zoster (chickenpox) virus - in fact it is a recurrence of chickenpox. PHN can be excruciating and debilitating. If PHN develops, the sooner treatment starts, the greater the likelihood of eliminating it.
Conventional painkillers will have no effect on the neurogenic pain of PHN, so specialised treatment is required which some GPs are unaware of.

If you require any further details please send a SAE and a donation (minimum of one pound) for the 19 pages of information (four of which are aimed at GPs and written by a doctor who specialises in pain relief).

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 10.00am to 6.00pm.

Parent organisation: Herpes Viruses Association (National).

Registered charity number 291657
