Affiliated to the British Heart Foundation, Hertbeats comprises people with cardiovascular problems who give mutual support in various ways. Activities include exercise sessions at St Albans City Hospital, Batchwood and Harpenden Leisure Centre; day and weekend trips and visits; a Christmas party and golf events, as well as an annual talk by the three consultant cardiologists of the West Herts Hospitals Trust.

Meetings are held (usually on the third Thursday of the month) at the Woollam Centre, Harpenden Road, St Albans. Apart from the 'Meet the Doctors' evening, talks are not usually related to cardiac matters.

The group publishes a monthly newsletter 'Hearts and Minds' and has the motto 'Carpe Diem' (Seize the Day).
