This may include considering arrangements for children, housing and financial issues. It enables couples to tailor-make solutions to their family's particular requirements.

Mediation reduces tension and hostility and can help to avoid expensive litigation. It encourages communication and collaboration and this is especially important where there are children, as couples may need to co-operate over their care and upbringing for some years to come.
