The L & D Hospital was the first NHS organistion in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire to become an NHS Foundation Trust.
The hospital is a medium size general hospital with 550 inpatient beds and provides a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services, including A&E, for over 300,000 people in Luton, South Bedfordshire and parts of northwest Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The catchment population is projected to increase to 500,000 in the next 10-15 years.
The Trust has developed some specialist services including cancer, oral maxillo-facial surgery and limb fitting and has the responsibility for treating the most premature babies across the whole of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
Each year the hospital provides healthcare services for:
* Over 50,000 inpatients and day-case patients requiring surgery or medical attention;
* Over 200,000 outpatients who attend clinics;
* Over 60,000 people who attend the A&E department;
* Over 5,500 babies who are born there.
