The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS) was formed on July 1, 2006, when the former Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire, Essex and East Anglian Ambulance Services combined to form one Trust. EEAS serves the communities of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk – a combined population of about 5.4 million living in an area of about 7,500 square miles.
It has more than 3,700 staff and an annual income of more than £189m. In 2006-07 it responded to 517,473 emergency incidents and provided more than 1.4 million non-urgent patient transport journeys. The Trust also provides out of hours GP services to patients in some parts of the region.
The East of England Ambulance Service's corporate headquarters is based at Bury St Edmunds, with locality offices in Bedford, Chelmsford and Norwich. The board is chaired by Maria Ball, with Hayden Newton as chief executive.
