Following a survey of need, a support group for Asian mothers of children with special needs has been set up in Watford and Three Rivers. The group, Roshni (meaning "light" in Urdu) began 2004 and gets together once a month at the Westfield Children's Centre in Watford, usually on the 2nd Wednesday afternoon in the month. A creche is provided for younger children. Transport can be arranged if prior notice is given.
At the group meetings, the mothers can talk about any issues of concern, and in addition speakers come in to talk about benefits, relaxation techniques, or any other topics of interest. Regular weekend activity sessions are being held for the special needs children and their brothers and sisters, so that the whole family can enjoy themselves. In addition, they have taken part in family outings, with activities for the children, whilst mums can relax and enjoy themselves. And the mums have had a couple of outing of their own - just going out for a meal together, which was very popular and likely to be repeated. Also they have had pamper sessions - each have been enjoyed by all.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the group or would like further information then please feel free to contact either Mateen Nadeem or Maureen Mill on the telephone numbers provided.
