The association was founded in 1957 to safeguard public rights in respect of footpaths, bridleways and roadside verges. The area concerned extends in a 6 to 7 mile radius from Bishops Stortford.
The aim is to monitor paths, to secure proper signposting and maintenance and to take action for the removal of obstructions. They also work through the highways and planning departments of the local authorities to achieve this.
Booklets of local walks are published every few years and programmes of guided walks are planned throughout the year.
