NRAG is a registered charity.

It aims to protect, conserve and preserve the New River, for the benefit of the public, and its immediate environs, reservoirs and filter-beds, flora and fauna.

The group is an umbrella organisation comprising about 50 member societies together with hundreds of individual "friends".

Activities have included conferences, exhibits at local shows, work with schools and colleges and meetings with Thames Water, the Lee Valley park Authority, MP's and local councils. They support local community campaigns which share their goals.
