The group was formed in 1996 to promote the conservation of these animals, further a greater awareness of their needs and to protect their natural habitat.

These objectives are met by field survey work, provision of advice to the public and other organisations, and the maintenance of a biological database.

Operates on the basis of a supporters network sending in records, observations and reporting threats to sites in their local areas. There is no fixed annual membership.

The sole concern of this organisation is for native amphibians and reptiles.
