These English courses come under two distinct headings:
* English as a Foreign Language;
* English for Speakers of Other Languages.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (English as a Second or Other Language) is for students over the age of 16 whose first language is not English and who are permanently settled in this country or Asylum Seekers.
Full and part-time courses are held at St Albans and part-time courses at Welwyn Garden City and Borehamwood Campuses. A wide range of accreditation is offered to beginner, intermediate and advanced students to prepare them for living and working in Britain and to help them progress to other courses in the college. All students are given an assessment to help them choose an appropriate course.
Evening classes are offered in St. Albans. Part-time classes for women (some with creches) are offered in community locations. Workplace courses are also available.
English as a Foreign Language is intended for people who have come to this country to improve their speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, listening and grammar.
Every student is assessed and placed into one of five levels from Pre-Intermediate to Proficiency. At each level students can work towards a recognised Cambridge exam. Full-time courses are held at St Albans City Campus for 15 hours a week, and part-time courses at St Albans City campus for 2-9 hours a week.
The English as a Foreign Language Summer School is held in July at St Albans City Campus.
