Summary Also known as University of the Third Age (National Office).
The Third Age Trust is the national representative body for more than 700 Universities of the Third Age who have between them over 206,000 individual members.
The Trust is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.
The aim of the Trust is 'the advancement of education and in particular, the education of middle aged and older people who are no longer in full-time employment.'
The Trust provides a wide range of support services to the existing U3As (e.g legal advice service, insurance cover, information packs, in-house magazine etc). The Trust also encourages the formation of new U3As where they do not already exist and generally acts as the 'voice' of the U3As in dealings with government departments, educational organisations, public bodies etc.
The U3As are autonomous, democratic, self-funded organisations that provide all types of day-time educational, creative and leisure activities for retired people at minimal cost by making use of the knowledge and skills of their own members.
Subjects covered include art, foreign languages, literature, poetry, history, music, philosophy, science, computing, geology and much more.
No qualifications are required to join U3A and no qualifications are awarded to members.
