The Settlement is a self-governing adult education centre, run on democratic lines. The centre is largely self-supporting, but is helped by other organisations which are interested in its work e.g. Letchworth Heritage Foundation and North Hertfordshire District Council. There is an annual membership fee of £18.00 (concessionary rate £13.00).
The Settlement is used for a range of activities, courses and events, visits and fund-raising events, regular group meetings.
Settlement Groups: There are various groups which members can join for an additional fee, including the Art Society, Country Dancing, Open Art Studio, Camera Club and Philosophy Group.
Courses are sponsored by the University of Cambridge Board of Continuing Education. There are around 45 courses in a year's programme; examples include Keep Fit, Hatha Yoga, Art, Music, Archaeology, Science, Upholstery and many more.
