Ofsted. Office for Standards in Education, Childrens Services and Skills
The new Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Childrens Services and Skills) came into being on 1st April 2007. It brings together the wide experience of four formerly seperate inspectorates.
Ofsted regulates or inspects the following services in England:
- childminders
- full and sessional day-care providers
- out of school care
- creches
- adoption and fostering agencies
- residential schools, family centres and homes for children
- all state maintained schools
- some independent schools
- Pupil Referral Units
- Children and Family Courts Advisory Service
- the overall level of services for children in local authority areas (these are called Joint Area Reviews)
further education
- Initial Teacher Training
- publicly funded adult skills and employment based training
Information on childcare providers is available through the Children's Information Service, through the local authority.
Inspection reports for local schools are available from the schools themselves and the OFSTED website. Schools should also supply local libraries.
