Hertfordshire Home Safety and Security Service aims to:

  • Reduce the number of domestic and distration burglaries
  • Reduce the opportunities for such burglaries
  • Reduce the fear of crime, especially in relation to burglary, domestic violence and racial harassment
  • Provide safer local communities
  • Improve home safety and security, particularly for older and vunderable people
  • Reduce the risk of accident and injury in the home
  • Reduce the rick of harm or damage from fire
Home security service
This includes the fitting of security measures like locks, door chains, spy-holes and smoke alarms. Expert advice is also given on how to stay safe and secure in your own home.

The service, including labbour and materials, is free of charge if the person is an actual or potential home burglary victim in one or more of the following categories:
  • Those aged 60 or over
  • Single parents
  • Vulnerable or housebound
Labour is still provided free to all other users but a donation is requested or charge made to cover the cost of materials.

Fire safety checks
These are done on behelf of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. They include installing smoke alarms where nonoe are fitted, or checking those already in place. If required, further fire safety support is offered from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service; by calling free on 0800 5873347

Handyperson service
Skilled technicians carry out all kinds of jobs around the home that improve safety or make life easier for people to look after themselves in their homes.
A modest cost is charged for all handy-person work and can be requested by:
  • Those aged 60 and over
  • People registered as disabled (any age)

All Hertfordshire Home Safety Service (HSSS) services are run across the county by three different service providers; depending on where the work is done. Please contact the relevant operator for yourself, your family or your friend:

SAFE

Area covered - Hertsmere, St Albans District, Welwyn Hatfield District, Stevenage Borough and North Herts. Towns in this area include: Baldock, Borehamwood, Bushey, Harpenden, Hatfield, Hitchin, Potters Bar, Radlett, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City.

West Herts Against Crime (WHAC)

Area covered - Dacorum, Three Rivers, Watford Borough.
Towns in this area include: Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead, Rickmansworth, Tring and Watford.

The HHSS is an umbrella organisation which includes partners from across the county. These include: Hertfordshire County Council; Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service; Hertfordshire Constabulary; District and Borough Councils; Help the Aged; Papworth Trust; SAFE; WHAC.
