What is a volunteer?
A person who freely gives his or her time to work with a local voluntary and community sector organisation (which may also be a charity).
Who can volunteer?
Everyone has something special to contribute - a special skill or ability, energy or time.
Voluntary work can act as a platform for developing new careers in - the caring professions - office work - community work etc. In fact, if you want to try something else, the Volunteer Centre will try to find it for you.
Most organisations try to pay out of pocket expenses and should provide insurance cover. Unpaid voluntary work will not stop you getting jobseeker's allowance or affect the amount you receive provided you remain available for work.

The Volunteer Centre will give you advice and help to clear any problems that you may have. They advise and support individuals undertaking voluntary work and follow up volunteers to iron out problems. They aim to help find voluntary work to suit your choice.
