Rotary International is the world's largest service organisation for business and professional people, with some 1,180,000 members in 63 countries worldwide. There are now over 59,000 Rotarians in 1,834 Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland, helping those in need and working towards world understanding and peace.
Rotarians - men and women alike - volunteer their efforts to improve the quality of life in their own communities and beyond their communities' borders. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.
Rotarians initiate community projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as violence, drug abuse, youth, AIDS, hunger, the environment, and iliteracy. Rotary clubs are autonomous and determine service projects based on local needs.
The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community and throughout the world. Rotarians build goodwill and peace, provide humanitarian service, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self".
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International was created in 1917 for the purpose of "doing good in the world". It supports Rotary's efforts to further world understanding and peace. Through the Foundation, Rotarians sponsor international educational and humanitarian programs, where some $90 million (US) is invested annually.
The Rotary Club of Hitchin Mimram is open to both men and women who enjoy helping in the local community. The club mainly functions locally in or around the villages of Whitwell, Codicote and Kimpton, although membership is not restricted to these villages.
Meetings are held each Monday evening in the Sun Hotel, Hitchin. Usually a speaker is arranged for each meeting, but frequently they meet with other local Rotary clubs or attend other local events, and social evenings.
