Harpenden Lions Club is a service organisation providing practical help and assistance for residents of Harpenden, Wheathampstead and Redbourn. The Club also raises funds for local, national and international charities.
The main event of the year is the Harpenden Lions Highland Gathering, held in July in Rothamsted Park. It attracts over 8,000 visitors; in 2008 nearly £20,000 was raised for charities. Other fund raisers held at various times include charity bookshops, tin shakes, Easter egg raffles, concerts and dances, etc.
Locally the club provides financial assistance to many charities, recently these have included Grove House, St Francis Hospice, Life Skills – schools’ education in ‘Personal, Social and Health Education with Citizenship', Pasque Hospice and many others.
As part of Lions Club International, the world's largest service organisation, the Club is also involved with international projects such as mobile eye hospitals, funding water wells, education assistance in Africa and India and many other worthwhile global causes.
Charities and caring organisations are invited to contact Harpenden Lions with requests for help and assistance which will be carefully considered by the Club and put to a vote.
The Club meets twice a month in Harpenden on Tuesday evenings and at many other times for social events, often with partners included. Likeminded people are encouraged to attend meetings to see whether they would like to join this thriving Club, which currently has over 30 members.
