Kiwanis is a world-wide organisation for individuals desiring personal involvement in helping to improve their local community.
The organisation was founded in Detroit, Michigan, USA in 1915 by a merchant tailor named Joseph Prance, who was the first Kiwanian.
The name 'Kiwanis' is derived from an American Indian term 'Nun Keewanis' which roughly translated means Self Expression.
Today Kiwanis clubs exist in over 71 countries around the World.
In the UK, Kiwanis is little known, but 6 clubs exist and these are in Luton, Stamford, Stevenage, Welwyn, Rockingham Forest and Brixton.

Meets on 2nd Thursday of the month 8.00pm. Social evenings are also held.
