The Harpenden Branch of UNA-UK was formed in 1947, less than two years after the founding of the United Nations itself. It is one of the most active branches in Hertfordshire, with regular public meetings and other activities.
UNA-UK works to ensure that the government makes the best possible use of the UN and gives it a central role in foreign policy. The UNA aims to win the hearts and minds of the British public. It is not a "single issue" organisation but is concerned for all of the worlds 5.5 billion people. War, hunger, disease, refugees, human rights, the environment and international law, these and many other issues are tackled by the UN and its agencies.
UNA-UK with 200 branches, is one of the 80 national UNAs in the world which together comprise the World Federtion of United Nations Associations.
The staff of UNA-UK work closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and many institutions and individuals. Specialist units cover refugees, conflict research, sustainable development and UNESCO. The UNA International Service sends volunteers to developing countries.
