Berkhamsted Community Playgroup

* Day/Time of meetings:
Monday-Thursday 9.15am-12noon and lunch club from 12noon to 1.00pm.

* Venue: The Youth Centre, Lagley Meadow (just beside the sports centre), Berkhamsted.

* Costs: £7.00 per session and £3.00 for lunch club.

Established in 1974, Berkhamsted Community Playgroup offers a stimulating environment for children aged two and a half to five years. The playgroup is entirely self-funded, relying on fees and fund-raising to pay for saleries, rent and day-to-day running costs. The fees cover the costs of the four permanent staff members and rent, and fund-raising activities cover the costs of materials and equipment.

Each morning the children are involved in craft activities and free play, followed by a snack and drink, story time, more free play (outside, weather permitting) and finally song time.

Materials are provided for painting, drawing, modelling, water play, sand play, construction, games and puzzles; there is also ample opportunity for physical development on the climbing frame, trikes and pushchairs; playacting is encouraged in the playhouse, with dressing up clothse, train sets, cars, toy farms etc; there is also a specific theme each term to help children become aware of their surroundings, using touch, hearing, smell and taste.
