The Children's Society was founded on a Christian vision and driven by Christian values.
They discriminate on one way only; by choosing to help those most in need, whatever their origins or beliefs.
They have the courage to face with children the most difficult situations; the imagination to help them define the way ahead, and the humility to accept that children may know better than we do what is best for them.
The Society's projects work directly with 50,000 children each year, but their research and campaigning create positive change for thousands more. They work where the need is greatest, currently in four key areas:
Young refugees:
Their goal is to ensure the legal system and its implementation recognises that children who are refugees are, first and foremost, children.
As such they should be protected by the laws and practices that safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
Children at risk on the streets:
When home becomes unbearable, children need a place that is safe. Food, shelter, understanding, protection, hope - whatever a child on the streets may have, their goal is to support them and ensure others do too.
Child in trouble with the law:
Lock up a child and the sentence lasts for life.
Their goal is to overhaul the criminal justice system to ensure the first response is not to see a criminal, but a child. By doing so, we begin to respond in a way that is best for the child and for society as a whole.
Disabled children:
Every child needs to be heard.
The determination and imagination of disabled children who want to be understood should be matched by those who they need to understand them.
Their goal is to see this upheld in law, so that disabled children's voices are heard in decisions that affect them.
The Children's Society is a Voluntary Society of the Church of England.
