St Albans Children's Centre was designated as a Sure Start Children’s Centre in August 2003. It is a virtual children’s Centre, with partners and services across the central St Albans community area, and its hub premises at Church Crescent, St Albans, AL3 5JD.
The Community Partners include Private and Voluntary Sector organisations, Primary Health Care services, Faith Groups, District Council, Parent run Groups, Junior Schools, Nursery Schools, Creches, Government Agencies e.g. Job Centre Plus.
The Hub Site at Church Crescent accommodates 3 main service areas, namely:
* Surestart Children’s Centre Service
* West Herts PCT, specialist Child Development Centre for children with special needs
* Muriel Green Nursery and Pre-School
A broad range of groups and activities are run from the centre and relate back to the 3 main service areas mentioned above.
Examples of local groups include:
Childminder Network, Opportunity Classes, Parenting classes and parent support groups, Job Centre sessions, free legal advice via Arkrights Solicitors, Lone Parents Group, Young Parents Group, Antenatal Classes, Twins Club, ADHD support group, Hope for Autism Group, Dyspraxia Support Group, Afasic Support Group, the Children's Information Service, a family resource room, and a baby cafe to support breastfeeding mums!
The Specialist Health Services include a multi-disciplinary team comprising paediatricians, occupational and physio therapists, opthalmists as well as speech and language therapists.
Muriel Green Nursery and Pre-School is situated at the hub site and operates as a key partner to the Centre. A Parent and Toddler Group is run once a week within the Nursery.
