The Scotland Office is the Government department charged with ensuring that Scottish interests are represented within the United Kingdom Government.

As part of the Government’s commitment to devolve power downwards, in July 1999 the Scottish Parliament and First Minister took responsibility for areas such as health, education, crime, housing and economic development.

The UK Government retains responsibility for a range of issues including employment, fiscal and economic policy, taxation, social security, benefits and pensions.
