The group holds occasional public meetings and campaigning or fundraising events.

They meet at Backhouse Room, 116 Handside Lane, Welwyn Garden City on the second Wednesday of each month, usually at 8.00pm, in order to write letters on human rights issues.

There are also some Saturday events and educational work concerning human rights.

Founded in 1961, by a British lawyer, Amnesty International now has members in 120 countries and national organisations in 55 countries. Its principal purpose is to promote human rights worldwide. In this context it works for the release of prisoners of conscience, opposes injustice and torture by exposing it and campaigning against it and strives to support the front-line defenders of human rights.

Date of AGM: April.

Parent organisation: Amnesty International (UK Section).

Publications: Amnesty (monthly); Local Newsletter.
