Peace Child's mission is to empower young people, first by educating them about the big challenges faced by their generation - making poverty history, sustainable development, human rights, conflict resolution etc., then by guiding and supporting them to take effective action to address those challenges.
The Peace Headquarters in Buntingford walks the talk of youth empowerment by operating a co-management regime where young volunteers staff from all over the world share equal responsibility with adults for the design, preparation and implementation of all its activities. Hertfordshire youth are welcome to join our young staff at any time to assist in the implementation of projects, either here in the UK or in one of our youth run affiliates in the 155 countries around the world where we operate.
Their major UK project is the Be the Change Challenge - where young people do presentations and workshops designed to encourage their peers in schools, youth groups, etc., to live more sustainable lifestyles. This programme, sponsored by DEFRA, has been running with great success in several Hertfordshire schools (contact rosey@peacechild.org).
Other projects include: the World Youth Congress series on Youth-led development which calls on governments to 'Give youth a chance mak poverty history!' and the Be the Change Youth-led development programme - encouraging young people do their own small community improvement projects. Also, Peace Child runs some extremely challenging Gap Year opportunities for UK youth.
