The Royal British Legion is an ex-Service organisation founded by an amalgamation of a number of organisations in 1921 in the aftermath of the First World War.
Under its first President, Field Marshal Haig, it pressed for the rights of all ex-Service men and women. The Legion runs the annual Poppy Appeal in November.
The Legion which was honoured with the prefix 'Royal' on its 50th anniversary, is now the largest and most influental of the country's ex-Service associations, with a membership of nearly 500,000. Millions of ex-Servicemen and women, and their depndants, have benefited from its welfare work.
The Royal British Legion is democratic, non-sectarian and non-political.
