The Red Lion Hotel was founded as a Priory in the 13th Century by the Order of Carmelites. The exquisite beams, hand carved by the monks, are still as strong today as they were 800 years ago and are some of the finest examples of their kind.
Over the years the Priory was used by travellers as a welcome rest inn and was even used by King James I when taken ill on a journey from Newmarket in 1619. His Highness later granted a special licence for the sale of wines. The current owners have done much to preserve and restore the original history and character of the building, whilst providing modern facilities.
The Red Lion offers 18 homely bedrooms (four poster/twin/family available), all unique in shape with ensuite, TV, telephone and even wonky floors!
All rooms have full private facilities, colour television, telephone and provision for making hot drinks. Double rooms are furnished with double or twin beds, and some with a four-poster bed.
