The vision of the Bishops Stortford YMCA is that young people reach their full potential in body, mind and spirit. By listening to, understanding and responding to the needs of young people, residents and clients are enabled to overcome barriers and shape the future direction of their lives.
Housing:
The provision of high quality, self-contained, residential accommodation is their core focus. They are able to accommodate 27 residents and work specifically with vulnerable young adults between the ages of 18 and 30, who are in need of support. They also provide an 'emergency only' overnight crash pad facility, as well as a communal facility unit for two residents aged 16-18 years.
Bishops Stortford YMCA staff work alongside residents to develop activities that are stimulating and challenging. Their objective is to enable each young person to move from dependence to independence and, via individual support plans, residents are able to identify and address areas of need during their 6 month to 2 year stay with YMCA. They are an accredited Provider of Supported Housing.
Work and Learn Programme:
The second core service the YMCA offers is their 'Work and Learn' programme - focusing on personal development. In 2007 they were re-accredited with the Matrix Quality Assurance Framework and with this accreditation in place, work has been undertaken in Hertfordshire and Essex to deliver professional and appropriate client, centred advice and guidance.
Initial personal development work focused on 'In-house' residential clients, but with grants received from the Key Fund they have been able to expand their Outreach services. They currently work with the Angle in Harlow. Their fully qualified Information, Advice and Guidance Manager offers skills in action planning for education and careers, developing self confidence, assertiveness and interview skills.
The Bishops Stortford YMCA invites readers to view their website - where an outline of their 5 year strategy and plans for future development are presented.
