North Herts Sanctuary is a 17 bed night shelter for the homeless, offering temporary accommodation in a friendly and comfortable environment.

The North Herts Sanctuary is a registered charity. They have been providing a night shelter for the homeless since 1992. Originally based in Letchworth, they moved to their current premises in Hitchin in 1999.

In 2002 they changed from being just a winter shelter to being open all year round, due to the increase in homelessness in their local area.

Their mission statement is:
'To provide targeted support and shelter to people in need, in order to offer hope of a better future for themselves and the community.'

They offer:
* A bed in a shared room;
* Cooked meals;
* Washing facilities;
* Showers;
* Laundry Facilities;
* TV and pool room;
* Support from the Project workers;
* DASH - Drug and Alcohol Support Services in Hitchin - Monday to Wednesdays and Fridays 2.00pm-4.00pm.

The Sanctuary can be accessed by:
* Self-refferal, by presenting at the shelter at 7.00pm on any night.
* Referral from outside organisations, such as councils, hospitals or probation services.

They charge just £1.00 per night, inclusive of all services and amenities, including an evening meal, breakfast and packed lunch.

Anyone who is homeless can use the shelter. Their clients are varied and include people with difficulties such as:
* Drug and alcohol dependence;
* Mental health issues;
* Relationship/Martial breakdown;
* Being on probation;
* Being released from prison;
* Other specific problems.

They are trying to actively encourage and assist clients and residents to address their specific problems including:
* Drug and alcohol dependency;
* Claiming benefits;
* Temporary or permanent housing;
* Completing forms.

As a charity, they are always grateful for any donations. Items always required include:
* Tea and coffee;
* Tins of fruit and custard;
* Cereals and biscuits;
* Any food items;
* Male and female clothing;
* Bed Linen;
* Towels;
* Toiletries.

They have vaious opportunities for people to work as volunteers. They are keen to take on people to undertake:
* Cooking;
* General housekeeping;
* Decorating;
* Fundraising events.
