Formerly called the National Care Standards Commission,the CSCI is an independent public body set up under the Care Standards Act 2000, to regulate social care services throughout England.
From 1st April 2002 the NCSC took responsibility for the registration and inspection of services - replacing the existing system of inspection by local authority and health authority inspection units.
From 1st April 2004 the CSCI took responsibility for registration and inspection of services replacing the existing NCSC.
The following services are required to register with the CSCI:
* Care Homes;
* Domiciliary Care Agencies;
* Nurses Agencies.
The Commission is also responsible for inspecting:
* Local authority fostering services;
* Local authority adoption services;
* The welfare aspects of boarding schools;
* Residential Special Schools;
* FE Colleges accommodating or arranging accommodation for students under 18.
