A guide to our Services

Jubilee Day Service provides services and activities for people living in St Albans, Harpenden and the surrounding area who need day time care and support outside the home environment. Our clients are people of all ages who have sensory or physical disabilities. The centre, which opened in 1979, has room for 35 users each day.

We aim to meet the individual needs of all clients in a caring and supportive environment by creating opportunities for people to join in activities which will help them to:
  • maintain their skills and abilities,
  • learn new skills and develop confidence in their abilities,
  • enjoy a varied range of activities in a friendly atmosphere.

  • The centre is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. It is closed for Bank Holidays and up to two other days a year for staff training.

Our varied activities give clients the opportunity to discover new interests. We offer a range of art and craft activities including watercolour painting, glass painting, basketry, plaster work, pottery, Extend (keep fit) and various board games, all aimed at improving dexterity, co-ordination and communicating skills. Social activities include word games, discussions, quizzes and crossword puzzles.

Additional services include benefits advice and counselling, a dentist who attends by appointment and an optician service.

The centre is fully accessible for people with mobility problems or who are wheelchair users. We have specialist equipment for moving and handling, and for eating and drinking, as well as facilities for attending to people's personal needs.

Refreshments: Tea, coffee or cold drinks and biscuits are available for a small charge. Lunch, for which there is a set charge, is provided from the District Council’s kitchen which is adjacent to the centre.

Transport is not automatically provided for people attending Adult Care Services. User’s needs will be assessed by the local Adult Care Services Area Teams to see if any support is needed with travel, and a variety of options will be explored. Where it is identified that the person requires specialist transport, the Area Team worker will arrange for it. Where transport is provided by Adult Care Services there is a charge to the person of £2 per return journey if they are assessed as being able to pay.

Our trained staff have extensive experience in working with people who have physical and sensory disabilities. The manager is responsible for the overall service as well as for a similar centre in Hemel Hempstead.
The duty manager is responsible in the manager’s absence. The day service organisers and day service support workers co-ordinate the day to day activities and carry out reviews. Day Service Social Workers run the daily activities and carry out personal care, when necessary. There is an occupational therapist who will advise on equipment, benefits and other issues relating to disability. We are fortunate in having a number of volunteers who offer assistance during the week. From time to time we have students on Work Experience placements.

Getting a Place: If you would like to attend you need to contact your Social Worker or Occupational Therapist. Or you can contact Herts Connect – click on the ‘Contact Adult Care Services’ signpost on the right.
