Hertfordshire County Council’s Kennedy Gardens day provides services for up to 35 mainly elderly people daily.

People from in and around Letchworth who may have a physical disability, mental health, dementia or other needs associated with ageing, attend the centre, which is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 4.30pm. Most people arrive by 10.15am and start to leave at 3.30pm.

We encourage people who use the centre to be as independent as possible by providing support that is tailored to each person’s individual needs. By providing a friendly atmosphere, people can feel comfortable and be able to socialise and make friends.

Through a variety of individual and group activities we help people to develop new skills and regain lost abilities, whilst being encouraged to become more actively involved in the day to day running of the centre. Activities available include painting, drawing, music, work in the greenhouse, card and board games, cookery, crafts, community trips and tasting sessions from different cultures. A number of quizzes, word games, gentle exercise sessions and discussion groups are also run and if people want, we can explore activities such as using computers.

Three groups of up to twelve people normally get together each morning, with each group having at least one member of staff to supervise the activities that have been planned for the day. After lunch people generally pursue individual interest, with less supervision from staff.

Our staff come from a variety of backgrounds and have extensive training and experience of working with people with differing disabilities and needs.

Every centre user is allocated a linkworker - a member of staff who provides individual support. Everyone also has a care plan, agreed with them, and tailored to their individual needs which is reviewed regularly.

A balanced two-course meal, with a choice of menu is served every lunchtime. Special dietary needs are catered for. We also serve tea and coffee and biscuits on arrival and again in the afternoon, before going home.

The centre and our gardens are fully accessible for anyone with mobility problems, including wheelchair users. We also have specially adapted toilets, as well as lifting equipment for those who require these aids and additional help is available for those who need it when eating and drinking.

We ask people not to smoke at any of our establishments. There are designated areas where smoking is allowed outside the buildings.

Transport is not automatically provided for people attending Adult Care Services. User’s needs will be assessed by the local Adult Care Services Area Teams to see if any support is needed with travel, and a variety of options will be explored. Where it is identified that the person requires specialist transport, the Area Team worker will arrange for it. Where transport is provided by Adult Care Services there is a charge to the person of £2 per return journey if they are assessed as being able to pay.
