Hertfordshire County Council's Berkhamsted and Tring Day Services provides daytime support and social activities for people living in Berkhamsted, Tring and surrounding villages.
Berkhamsted Day Centre in Manor Street is open five days a week, Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 3.30pm. We can accommodate between 20 and 25 people a day. The days are designed to enable carers to have some respite.
Tring Day Centre is open three days a week in Victoria Hall from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We can accommodate up to 14 elderly people a day.
About us
At the centres we are able to provide some personal care. We also provide a range of social activities, which all clients can join. We aim to meet the individual needs of clients in a caring and supportive environment and enable them to build and develop their own abilities and maintain the personal skills that they have.
We encourage our clients to make choices about their lives, both in the centres and as members of the community, and also to enjoy themselves through meeting new people, making friends and taking part in group activities.
Daily activities
Gentle exercise, art and craftwork, playing dominoes or board games, play reading, quizzes and discussion groups are some of the activities which are on offer to the clients. The local library provides a book and audio cassette loan service. Recently thay have extended their service to include videos for people with a hearing impairment. We also have speakers giving talks and demonstrations.
Attendance Times
Times can be worked out to suit the needs of individual clients and their carers. We close for two days for staff training a year and also Bank Holidays. Clients and carers are always notified of closures.
Transport is not automatically provided for people attending Adult Care Services. User’s needs will be assessed by the local Adult Care Services Area Teams to see if any support is needed with travel, and a variety of options will be explored. Where it is identified that the person requires specialist transport, the Area Team worker will arrange for it. Where transport is provided by Adult Care Services there is a charge to the person of £2 per return journey if they are assessed as being able to pay.
About the Staff
Staff work flexibly across the services in Berkhamsted and Tring. They are actively supported by groups of local volunteers. Senior staff working in the different centres will ensure that the services are run in a professional manner. Staff have training and are experienced in working with people with varying disabilities. The Manager's role is to develop, monitor and maintain the servcie and is supported in this by the Unit Administrator.
Reviews
All clients have a Personal Care Plan, which is reviewed annually. Their linkworker is available for general help and information. An initial review is held after the client has been at the Centre for 6 weeks.
Food and Refreshment
A moderate charge is made for the midday meal, tea, coffee and biscuits which are provided at the centre.
We are wheelchair friendly
All the buildings we use are fully accessible for anyone with mobility problems.
Meetings held at Berkhamsted
The centre's facilities are also used by small self-help groups and voluntary organisations. Berkhamsted Access Committee, Hertfordshire Association for the Disabled and mental health carers support group are among the organisations which regularly meet at the centre.
What our clients say
We asked people who use the centres in Berkhamsted or Tring to help us describe the services we offer.
Jean
It's good to get away from the four walls at home and have company. The staff are very nice and are willing to help us.
Betty
If I didn't come to the day centre, I wouldn't get to see anyone.
Peggy
I enjoy the activities that we are able to do and it's nice to meet my friends.
John
Allows me to get out of the house and I like joining in with any activity that is on offer.
Comments and complaints
If someone who uses the centre is unhappy with the way we work with them, they should tell their linkworker, other staff at the centre or their Social Worker.
If the staff member cannot help, then the client should speak to the manager. Most things can be sorted out this way.
For more information about this, please ask for a copy of the leaflet 'Comments, complaints and compliments' which explains our complaints procedure.
When we have a client review, we also give them a leaflet 'Having Your Say' which they can complete and send to Adult Care Service.
