Your district or borough council may be able to help if you need to adapt, improve or repair your accommodation. This may be subject to certain conditions.
Disabled Facilities Grants may be available whether you are an owner-occupier, landlord or tenant and can apply to any type of accommodation. Your local council would want to be sure that the work to be done was relevant and necessary for the disabled occupant and reasonable in relation to the age and condition of the property. The amount of any funding would also depend on what savings or income you may have.
Home owners may qualify for a Home Repair Assistance Grant or a House Renovation Grant from the local district or borough council.
Community Care Grants are available from the Benefits Agency to pay for one-off costs such as beds, bedding, heaters, clothes, travel costs. You do not have to repay the grant. You can apply for this grant if you get pension credit, income support or income-based jobseeker's allowance, or if you do not qualify for one of these benefits now but are likely to do so within 6 weeks of leaving hospital, residential care, prison or similar accommodation.
Your occupational therapist will be able to advise you further on these and other ways of funding adaptations.
