Hertfordshire County Council’s Leyden House provides services for up to 140 adults daily.
People from in and around Stevenage who have learning and physical disabilities, special needs who need special care attend the service.

Leyden House is open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, and offers a number of evening and occasionally weekend activities.

We build on people’s abilities and enable them to make more choices and to develop their skills.
We do this within a safe, caring and supportive environment and in a way that gives encouragement, builds self-confidence and skills and treats each person with respect.
Our aim is to improve the quality of life for everyone that uses our services.

People have different needs so the service we provide is tailored to the individual.
We have many opportunities on offer including work experience, building social skills and leisure activities.
We help people to get involved in activities outside our main resources and run a number of projects to promote integration in the local community, supported through the creation of mixed-ability groups.
Working in partnership with other support services and organisations to access education and work, the projects cater for people with high dependency needs:
  • Leyden Connect is a dedicated resource in Southgate, Stevenage
  • Timebridge FreeGoing use youth centre facilities
  • The Leyden Community Support Services assist people who do not require a five-day a week service. These needs-led sessions are chosen by groups and incorporate social and educational sessions based in people’s own homes and in the community

Regular visitors to Leyden House include Health professionals such as physiotherapists, a dietician, occupational therapists, psychologists, community nurses.
Users at Leyden House receive support from psychiatrists and speech therapists (who work in British Sign Language and Sign Along or Makaton - sign languages).
Collectively, these people make individual assessments, from which a programme is worked out for individuals to work on between visits.
We use specific equipment for people who need it, such as hoists for people who require lifting, radio aids for profoundly deaf people when required and standing frames as advised by occupational therapists.

Our staff come from a variety of backgrounds and have extensive training and experience of working with people with differing disabilities and needs.
Staff also undertake training to NVQ levels II, III and IV.
Every service user is allocated a linkworker, a member of staff who provides individual support.
Everyone also has a care plan, agreed with them, and tailored to their individual needs which is reviewed regularly.

For people who do not bring a packed lunch, a hot meal is provided at our Leyden Road site and costs £2.50.
At our other sites, service users buy their own meals from a variety of shops.

Our buidlings are fully accessible for anyone with mobility problems, including wheelchair users.

We ask people not to smoke at any of our establishments. There are designated areas where smoking is allowed outside the buildings.

Transport is not automatically provided for people attending Adult Care Services. User’s needs will be assessed by the local Adult Care Services Area Teams to see if any support is needed with travel, and a variety of options will be explored. Where it is identified that the person requires specialist transport, the Area Team worker will arrange for it. Where transport is provided by Adult Care Services there is a charge to the person of £2 per return journey if they are assessed as being able to pay.

For more information, or to arrange a visit, please contact us directly on 01438 314181 (voice/text) during our opening hours.
