Hertfordshire County Council's Bishop's House provides services for people from in and around Bishop's Stortford who may be physically frail, suffer from mental confusion or have learning difficulties.
People attend the centre between one half day and five full days a week. The centre is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and to 4.30pm Friday. Our morning sessions run from 10am to 12.30pm and the afternoon sessions run from 2pm to 4pm. The exception to this is the people who use Bishop's House transport (mainly older people) who will usually finish at around 3pm.
Everyone who uses our centre is encouraged to be as independent as possible and to make their own choices, as well as to be involved in the day-to-day running of the centre. In a friendly, supportive and stimulating environment, we enable people to continue living in their own homes in the local community while providing carers with a break.
Activities at the centre include discussion (for example talking about relationships), art, crafts, pottery, woodwork, bingo, indoor bowls, cookery, quizzes, relaxation, gardening, sports, music, drama, literacy and numeracy. We also run our own in-house newsletter and arrange additional activities in the local community for more active people, such as shopping, swimming and other sports.
We are able to offer a limited service to people referred to us by social services authorities outside Hertfordshire. Places are offered at the discretion of the manager and charges are made directly to the relevant social services organisation.
Our staff come from a variety of backgrounds and have extensive training and experience of working with people with differing disabilities and needs.
Every centre user is allocated a linkworker, a member of staff who provides individual support. Everyone also has a care plan, agreed with them and tailored to their individual needs, which is reviewed regularly.
Lunch is available every day between 12.30pm and 1pm for a set charge. A varied menu caters for specific dietary requirements and includes vegetarian and diabetic dishes. We usually have tea/coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon. A small charge is also made for these drinks.
The centre is fully accessible for people with sensory needs, including wheelchair users. Toilet facilities are spacious and assistance is available if required. We have specialist equipment for moving and handling and for eating and drinking.
We ask people not to smoke at any of our establishments. There are designated areas where smoking is allowed outside the buildings.
Transport is not automatically provided for people attending Adult Care Services. User’s needs will be assessed by the local Adult Care Services Area Teams to see if any support is needed with travel, and a variety of options will be explored. Where it is identified that the person requires specialist transport, the Area Team worker will arrange for it. Where transport is provided by Adult Care Services there is a charge to the person of £2 per return journey if they are assessed as being able to pay.
If you would like to attend you need to contact your social worker or occupational therapist. Alternatively, you can contact our Customer Service Centre: details can be found by selecting the link on the left of this page called 'Contact us'.
