Occupational Therapy
Children’s Occupational Therapists in Herts work together with parents and carers as part of the multi-disciplinary team in child development centres, mainstream and special schools and the child’s own home. They work particularly closely with children’s physiotherapists and speech and language therapists.
They aim to enable children from pre-school to school age (16 in mainstream – 18 in special education) through purposeful activity and play to reach their maximum functional level in all aspects of daily life and to attain the highest possible quality of life and independence.
The Children’s Occupational Therapy service may provide assessment and treatment advice in any of the following areas:
- Children requiring specialist seating equipment to facilitate independence and access play and learning skills.
- Children with problems in managing daily living activities –bathing, dressing, feeding etc.
- Children with co-ordination problems which may feature perceptual and sensory integration difficulties. Therapy aims to improve the way the child organises sensations, thus enabling him/her to learn and make purposeful sense of sensory information from his/her environment.
- Children with difficulties in Fine Motor Skills – dexterity, hand-eye co-ordination etc. Children who require Hand Splints.
Occupational Therapy aims will be integrated into the child’s personal and educational goals.
