Keep your mobile phone safe

This article contains important information about how to keep your mobile phone safe and to try and lessen the chances of becoming a victim of street crime.

There are several key things that you can do to keep hold of your mobile phone and to make it less attractive to potential thieves and muggers.

What to do...

  • Security mark the phone and the battery using an ultra-violet marker pen. This will only be visible under a UV light. You should write your postcode and house number, as this will help to prove that the phone is yours. You can find out more information about security marking mobile phones from your local police station.
  • Make a note of your phone's serial number - keep this information safe as this may be needed if you need to report a theft to the police or your insurance company.
  • Many phones have a unique identifier number, or IEMI number, which will consist of 15 digits. Again, you will need this information to supply to your mobile phone network if the phone is lost or stolen. You can find out what your identifier number is by entering the following code into your phone: *#06#. If entering this code does not display the number, check behind the battery in the back of the phone and you should see the number there.
  • If your phone has a security lock or PIN code facility on it, then make sure you use it - keep a record of this information in a safe place separate from the phone.

    What NOT to do

  • Don't attract attention to your phone when you are using it or are walking along the street. Keep it out of sight in your pocket or handbag. If you have to answer a call move into a position where you can place your back against a wall or similar. This way you can monitor anyone approaching you. Mobile phone muggers tend to be opportunistic and grab the phone as they run past the victim. They are less likely (but not always) to approach someone who is watching them approach and can therefore see them clearly, and identify them later.
  • Don't leave your mobile phone in an unattended car, especially if you have parked it in an isolated or badly lit area. If you must leave it in the car, leave it out of sight in the glove box or in the boot.
  • Finally, If someone does demand your phone - give it to them. Your phone can be replaced - you can not!

If your phone does get lost or stolen...

  • Make sure you report the loss or theft to the police immediately.
  • Also, let your mobile phone network know so that they can disable the phone as quickly as possible.

If you do see anything suspicious, call the Police on 999. Alternatively, if you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
