Care and support

Where to look for help and advice

How does a child come to live with me?

Family eating together Once you have been approved as a foster carer - which normally takes about six months from your initial enquiry, you will have a supervising social worker who is linked specifically to you. That person is usually the worker who did your assessment with you.

The worker assigned to you will offer support and advice while you consider which child, or children, you may wish to foster.

They will provide you with as much information as they possibly can to help you decide whether you would like to offer to care for the child, or children.

You will be given much more information about how this happens when you undertake the training and assessment.

Once a child is placed with you, you will receive support from your supervising social worker and other members of the team who provide care to the child, such as the child’s social worker.
