Celebration and Review of the Older Family Carers Service

An excellent turnout of nearly 60 people – Carers, Voluntary Agencies, Health and Social Care, plus others contributed to a very successful celebration and review of this 3 yr old service at Hatfield House on June 9th 2009. Almost half who attended were carers – many of whom were 70 years plus and had not had a previous experience of a social care event or contributing in workshops.

Designed to support older carers aged 70yrs plus, who look after an adult with a learning disability – this specialist service has developed with the support of carers and professionals. The service recognises that carers in this age group often wish to be supported to make plans for the future, but may be reluctant to approach social care services. Emphasis is given to allowing time to build relationships between the carer, their family and the Older Family Careworker to make plans for the future care of the adult with a learning disability. Information on the history, development of the service, referrals and excellent outcomes for carers were shared.

During the event, a carer spoke movingly of their family’s experience of the assistance the service had offered them, which resulted in a good plan for the future.

Quotes from carers about the service:

It has helped me considerately so far and I am sure will continue to do so. Highly appreciated.

Great progress has been made in establishing a coherent and accessible care/service system plus willingness to get involved regularly.

It was the first time we have been involved with the older carers group & we found it to be very welcoming & informative & was also lovely to be given the opportunity to meet people who understand our situation as carers

Quotes from Health & Social Care staff, Voluntary Organisations:

It is a great service. I didn’t know about it before!

They are going to be very busy but very vital to carers over the coming years – lots of ideas to be working on.

What now? Many suggestions were made during the workshops, for developing the service further. A small project group of carers and professionals are meeting to organise these into recommendations for action.
