Benefits - What is Carer's Allowance?

Carer's Allowance is paid if you care for someone who receives Attendance Allowance or Disability Living Allowance (middle or highest care part).

To get it you must be 16 or over and:
  • provide care for at least 35 hours a week (including time spent with the person checking they are ok, not just physically caring) and
  • not earn more than £87 a week from employment and
  • not be a full-time student (a full time student has 21 hours or more of supervised study per week).

For further advice about benefits select the 'Benefits for Carers' and 'Benefits advice' links on the right of this page.

IMPORTANT: To view the full text of our 'Benefits for carers' leaflet online, or order copies, select the link called 'Adult Care Services Publications' on the right of this page, then go to the 'Carers' section.
