The DFG is a grant which is administered by local councils for adaptations to property to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The upper limit is £25,000 in England and £30,000 in Wales, but help is means-tested so a person in full-time work will often have to make a contribution. However, since 31st December 2005, there is no means-test where an application for a DFG is made by the parent or guardian of a disabled child or young person. Since 2 April 2001, foster carers have been able to apply for disabled facilities grants (DFG) in the same way as natural and adoptive parents but they are usually required to certify that the child will live in the dwelling for a certain amount of time.
