What is a care home?

Care homes are places which have to be registered under the Care Standards Act 2000 because they provide personal care. Some care homes also provide nursing care. Where it is important to know which type of home is being referred to, this will be made clear. Mostly though the term care home refers to both.

What types of stay are there?

There are 3 types of residents in care homes - permanent, temporary and those who are resident for a respite or trial period. The type of stay can affect the way your resources are treated and how benefits are calculated. Where the type of stay affects the rules, this will be made clear.

Who has to pay for all their care home fees?

You will be expected to pay for the care home fees in full if you have over:
  • £22,250 in capital or
  • income high enough to meet the cost of the care home
